Historical motorcycle registration
Ulysses Club Inc. has recently been approved by the RTA as a historic vehicle club for the purposes of the Conditional Registration Scheme that is an option for motorbikes 30 years of age or older as from the year of manufacture. Bikes registered under the scheme are exempt from the payment of stamp duty, motor vehicle tax and national charges. Included in the annual fee, which is less than $80, is compulsory 3rd party insurance.
Eligible bikes must be as close to original as possible, with NO alterations except for safety features such as turn indicators, or period accessories or options, if desired. To be registered they must have the normal Safety Inspection Report (pink slip) plus a Club Declaration of Roadworthiness issued by a Club Member. I shall be obtaining a supply of the Declarations.
The owner must have proof of financial membership of the Ulysses Club and the bike can only be used for events organised by the Ulysses Club, another Club or recognised community organisation provided an official invitation has been received and documented by the Branch in official minutes or in an official "day book".
The Branch Committee has yet to appoint a minder of the day book, but in the meantime, if you have any questions, contact me on 64930234.
Vehicles can also be used on a road or road related area for servicing within a short distance from their place of garaging, or for the inspection of the vehicle. If a longer servicing journey is required it must be pre-approved and recorded in the day book.
I n my stable of bikes is a 1975 BMW 90/6 which is on historical plates issued through the Bega Heritage Motor Club. Today I visited the Bega Motor Registry and had my registration papers reissued (at no charge) with the Ulysses Club added as a second primary club – which means I am now covered for all events on their respective calendars. I know there are several members with older bikes languishing in their sheds. Now you have a cheaper option for getting them on the road. Also, NRMA Veteran, Vintage and Classic Vehicle Insurance will comprehensively insure most historical bikes for just $48.40 a year. You cannot get it through the local NRMA office or via the normal NRMA phone number – you must call 1800 646 605, 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
